8 Tips For Adwords Success
by Jeremy Wilson
Google Adwords can be tricky and a
little confusing.
A properly optimized Adwords campaign can drive a
steady flow of ready to buy customers to your web
site
with a reasonable investment of time and money.
Below are eight tactics you can use to build a
thriving campaign and beat the competition.
-----Target Your Location-----
When setting up an Adwords campaign, don't make the
mistake of showing your ad in all countires and
locations if the product or service you are
promoting
is not of interest to all countries and locations.
A lawn care service in the state of North Carolina
would be of no interest to someone in France or
Germany.
This may sound like common sense, but many people
burn
up impressions by targeting the wrong locations and
end up with lower click through rates as a result of
not properly targeting their market.
-----Mine the niches for profitable keywords-----
Use a service such as WordTracker or a program like
GoodKeywords to find higly profitable low
competition
keywords. Just because a keyword or phrase is not
searched on a lot does not mean it won't bring in a
good number of leads.
The more general the phrase the less focused your
potential customers will be.
It is better to have a few highly focused phrases
that
get clicks than to be number one for the most
popular
word or phrase in your market.
Besides, the average Adwords user will only focus on
the most popular phrases leaving you to clean up
with
the less popular but more profitable keywords.
-----Think Like Your Customer-----
The tendency of most people is to bid on keywords
that
only a professional in your field of expertise would
use.
If the "computer guy" at an office building speaks
to
one of his co-workers using a bunch of geek speak,
they are going to look at him with a blank, confused
stare . They simply don't get what he is talking
about.
Think like your customer. What words would they use
to find your ad? Ask your friends and family what
they
would use. You'll be surprised how much this can
help.
----Use Keyword Matching Options----
Google offers several ways to format the keywords
you
bid on.
There is a big difference between:
honda car parts
"honda car parts"
[honda car parts]
Master the use of these keyword options and you will
stand a better chance of success.

-----Don't Fear Your Daily Budget-----
People get really worried when it comes to setting a
daily budget for their Adwords campaign. They are
afraid they will spend too much.
"My recommended daily budget is $80! I can't afford
that..."
Sure you can. In fact, you should probably set it
higher.
The daily budget Google recommends seems to always
be
a little off. Either it is too low and your ad is
not
shown enough or it is too high and you will never
spend
that much in a day.
If you are paying .33 a click on average and your
daily budget is $80, you would need to get 240
clicks
a day to get to $80. Are you getting that many
clicks? The big guys might but for a small campaign
setup by a beginner it is unlikely.
Of course if you are spending more per click you
could
easily reach $80 a day. Adjust the example to your
numbers
and see how many clicks per day your budget can
stand.
If you set your daily budget higher than Google
suggests,
your ad will be shown more and you will be able to
better
gauge how your keywords will perform. After a week
or two of
testing you can always bump your budget down.
-----It's All In The Title-----
Google displays the phrase searched on in bold in
the
title and text of your ads.
By using your keywords in the title and text of your
ad, it will stand out from your competitors and grab
the eye of your prospective customers.
Any edge no matter how small can make a difference
-----Keep Adgroups small and clutter free-----
Don't be tempted to create one or two adgroups with
a
huge number of words in the them.
It is impossible to write an ad that can perform
well
for 50 different keywords.
Keep the number of keywords per adgroup to around
10.
I prefer to max out around 5 and sometimes even
less.
Yes, this can be time consuming, but when you start
getting really good click throughs that time spent
is
well worth it!
-----Quitters Never Win-----
Don't give up!!
Many people fail because they give up too soon. If
an
Adwords campaign isn't a smashing success in a day
or
two, a lot of people say it's not working and quit.
Adwords takes time. Give it at least month. Study
your stats. Don't be afraid to test different
things.
Persistence is crucial.
Of course, those that give up make it easier for the
rest of us ;o)

Next week I plan to give you an analysis of an
Adwords campaign I am running as a test for a
new website.
It has been up for about a month and continues to
perform extremely well. We'll take a look at the
strategies used and the results achieved.
Still debating whether I should reveal the keywords
I'm using.
