Make way for the contender to Google's crown
- May 30, 2003
You're not going to believe this, but a new search
engine has just appeared and, well, it may be better
than Google.
Obviously, that sounds slightly ridiculous but after
having spent a day devising weird and wonderful
searches and comparisons, not only has it stood up to
the test but it's so good that you realise how much of
an effect Google has had on your thinking when it
comes to searching the Net.

Apple or eBay.
Google gamers' word pairings a creative addiction
- May 30, 2003
Are you a creative type with an Internet connection
and a vocabulary that's Brobdingnagian?
If your stock of words includes little-used verbiage
like that synonym for ``big,'' and you can find an
equally unlikely word to pair it with online --
vasodilator, perhaps -- ``googlewhacking'' might be
just the game for you.

copywriting for paid listings, not only for your
potential customers, but increasingly to meet the

Building Up Your Keyword Inventory -
May 30, 2003
One of the more common questions you hear from web
site owners and marketers doing pay per click (PPC)
advertising is "How do I come up with more keywords to
bid on?" What they are additionally saying without
stating the obvious, is of course "How do I come up
with keywords that others haven't thought of?"
THE GOOGLE UPDATE...IS
STILL...CONFUSING
- May 22, 2003
If you have noticed strange results in Google lately
you aren't alone.
It seems an old index is being used and some backlinks
to sites have been removed. Two of my sites just
picked up by Google disappeared from the index
altogether.
Google is definitely up to something and I think it
could be a move to a more permanent "constant" update
cycle rather than the monthly index in an effort to
keep results fresh and up to date.
Of course, this is pure speculation and if you want to
hear the latest conspiracy theories checkout the
Google forum at WebMasterWorld
http://www.webmasterworld.com/forum3/
Be careful, too much time spent here will make you
paranoid!
Google is trying to make itself better and I believe those
of you who have worked hard to legitimately optimize
your site will soon see your efforts pay off as Google works
to penalize and ban sites that use spammy tricks.
Bootcamp 275: The good Google guide -
May 22, 2003
Google is popular because it is fast and there is no
clutter. On a bad day you can wait 10 seconds or more
for some rival search engines just to load their front
page; Google appears more or less instantly and the
first page of "hits" normally takes less than a second
to display.
Results pages are clearly presented and easy to
understand - there are no banner ads or fancy graphics
to slow things down. It's not entirely ad-free but the
"Sponsored Links" are unobtrusive and often relevant.
Magic Secret to Google -
May 22, 2003
Okay - what is the "magic" to getting listed at the
top of Google? I've done a keyword search and then
tear apart the sites that pop up. Most have several
things in common, one of which is this in their
header:
<meta name="GOOGLEBOT" content="NOARCHIVE">
Or they may have:
<META NAME="robots" CONTENT="index,follow">
As a newbie to Web page design, what are these telling
the robots to do, and does it help in the rankings?
Google Reduces Minimum Bid on Some Keywords
- May 22, 2003
Google has quietly lowered the minimum price of some
keywords in its AdWords program, in a move it hopes
will entice more advertisers to try the service.
A Google representative confirmed that the company
notified advertisers last week that the minimum bid
price for all keywords 5 cents per click. While the
majority of keywords were already at this range,
others in attractive verticals like travel commanded a
higher minimum.
Yahoo takes on Google for search leadership
- May 22, 2003
Internet media company Yahoo has launched an
advertising campaign aimed at recapturing its role as
the number one search engine from Google.
Silicon Valley-based Yahoo, which started its life as
a directory of Web sites, turned its attention away
from search as it built a destination site with news,
maps, travel services and messaging. The move opened a
window of opportunity for rivals such as Google, which
focused exclusively on developing and operating search
engines and related advertising services.

- May 22, 2003
In an online advertising world dominated by 900-pound
gorillas Overture and Google AdWords, what do

the party?
Additional traffic at reasonable incremental cost,

popularity. Google World is a categorized directory

Google Hiring Engineers for a New York Office
- May 22, 2003
With the technology start-up boom over, the term
Silicon Alley is fading into history, leaving behind a
New York Internet industry that offers little
excitement. But that has not stopped Google Inc., the
Internet's post-boom darling, from planning to hire a
team of about 100 software engineers for its Manhattan

Online advertisers find what they need at Google
- May 7, 2003
Here's one question Google, the world's most popular search
engine, won't answer: How much money does it make?
The privately held company only will say it has been
profitable for nine quarters.
Since search is free, most of Google's profit comes from
online advertising.
A Virginia shoe salesman's story illustrates Google's appeal
to advertisers:
Google: An engine of change -
May 7, 2003
When NBC's ``Today Show'' wants to take the pulse of America,
it goes to Google for the most-requested online searches.

The obvious question, of course, is "why?"
Thomas Weisel gets close to Google -
May 7, 2003
Bankers were not allowed to speak to research analysts, one
employee said in jest.
But unlike past Internet conferences, not necessarily TWP's,
since Tuesday's was its first "Internet" gathering, there was only one privately
held Internet company in attendance, Google.
And, you couldn't help but notice that Michael Moritz, venture
capitalist at blue-chip Silicon Valley VC outfit Sequoia Capital, and a director
of Google, was in attendance sitting next to Thomas Weisel, the founder of the
eponymous investment bank.
