Sometimes It Hurts To Be #1
by Jeremy Wilson
It's the goal of every webmaster.
Type in your keywords at Google and have your site
show up
at the top of the search results.
There's no denying the excitement. You made it to
the top
of Google, the biggest and best search engine in the
world!
All that's left to do is sit back and wait for the
flood
of traffic.
But what if your #1 Google ranking turns out to be
insignificant? What happens if being listed at the
top
doesn't generate much traffic? What if no one
searches
using your keywords and phrases?
You might as well not even be listed.
As it turns out, I have quite a nack for this!
Listed below are some search terms gooGuide
currently ranks in the top 10 with and the number of
times each term is searched on each month according
to WordTracker and
Overture.

Ouch! Good rankings, but practically no demand for
any
of these terms.
While this may look like a wasted effort, some
things need
to be put into perspective.
Overture and WordTracker do not report how many
times
people use a search term on Google as Google doesn't
make
this information publicly available.
Despite what WordTracker and Overture are reporting,
I am
receiving a decent amount of traffic from several of
these
terms. But they are correct in that there is not a
high demand for these terms.
They may not report the specifics of Google, but
WordTracker and Overture are very good barometers
for a
keyword's popularity
For an online business to succeed you need a steady
stream
of traffic. If you are using search engines as your
main
source of traffic, picking the right keywords is
critical.
If you find yourself in a similar situation, good
rankings for
low demand keywords, take heart. You obviously know
how
to optimize a page. You just need to find the right
keywords.
Before you spend a huge amount of time optimizing
pages for what you think people will search on,
invest some time in
keyword research to know what people search on.
If not, you may be sorry.
